Kisii High School students were yesterday sent home as the teachers national strike entered its third week. Principal Casper Maina told the students that the school cannot keep them because there are no teachers to teach them. The students have been in school since the opening of third term on September 5.
They have been hoping the strike will be called off soon, but it seems it is taking longer than they had expected. The students said they have been revising on their own because their teachers have been on strike. “We have been revising on our own as we prepare for end of year and KCSE exams," said Mark Otuke, a form two student.
He said the student have been waiting for the strike to end "so that we can have our teachers back." Otuke said the strike has affected their learning especially the form four classes. “We are appealing to the concerned parties to resolve the impasse for the sake of our future,” he said.
“The situation is beyond our control that is why we have asked that you go home until the strike is called off,” Maina said. He said that business in others schools has been paralyzed and thus there was no need of keeping the students at school when no teacher was around to teach them. However form four candidates remained in school to continue revising on their own ahead of the KCSE examinations.
Kisii County Kenya Union of Post Primary teachers (Kuppet) Executive Secretary Ben Nyaundi said that no teacher will be in class until the stalemate is resolved. “As it stands now the strike is on until the government addresses our demands. I am urging our members to stay put,” Nyaundi said.
