Kalonzo's Wiper, Kiraitu's APK And Kibaki's PNU In Merger Talks

Kalonzo Wiper and Kiraitu PNU In Merger Talks

Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and Energy Minister Kiraitu Murungi are in talks over what could be the beginning of political re-alignments in the country. The talks would see Wiper Democratic Movement and Alliance Party of Kenya settle on a pre-election agreement.

Also included in the talks is President Kibaki's Party of National Unity (PNU).The VP yesterday met with PNU acting chairman Gideon Konchellah and organising secretary Maina Kamanda at his Jogoo House office where they agreed to work towards a coalition arrangement. The meeting was also attended by Defence assistant minister David Musila and Kangundo MP Johnstone Muthama.

Impeccable source that was part of the meeting said they had agreed on a number of issues “including a working relationship that will see us approach the elections together”. Muthama declined to confirm whether such a decision had been reached. “This was an internal meeting and we did not invite the media and that shows you how secret this meeting was.

You wait for some time, we will soon announce to the country the good news,” Muthama said when asked about the meeting and its outcome. Officials of the three parties are this morning scheduled to meet and iron out the finer details of the deal.

The team is expected to issue a statement on the development tomorrow. Insiders said the three parties had decided to work together following the collapse of the G7 Alliance which brought in Uhuru Kenyatta’s The National Alliance, William Ruto’s URP and Eugene Wamalwa’s New Ford Kenya, among others.

Each of the four parties have since made it clear that they are no longer interested in working towards a coalition and have gone ahead to try and build support for their respective parties separately. The meeting is also reported to have discussed the possibility of dissolving their parties and uniting under Kiraitu Murungi’s National Alliance Party.

This however was not received well with those at the meeting saying it would be better for all parties if they fielded their own candidates instead of merging. Yesterday’s meeting agreed that the three parties nominate five people each to serve as a technical team that will conclude the negotiations.

Kalonzo has been calling for an alliance by parties opposed to Prime Minister Raila Odinga and two weeks ago while on a tour of Rift Valley he said he was willing to form an alliance with Eldoret North MP and URP presidential aspirant William Ruto.
