A failed music producer the International Criminal Court claimed was the linkman between President Kibaki's PNU and the Mungiki during 2007/2008 post election violence has reiterate his claims that he led three youth groups to State House for a meeting with senior government officials.
Geoffrey Wanjau Machira said he and the three groups were at State House on November 26, 2007. Former ICC chief prosecutor Louis Moreno Ocampo claimed President Kibaki met Mungiki at State house on that date. These claims have been persistently refuted by State House. President Kibaki has also sent a personal statement to the ICC denying the allegations by Ocampo.
Kibaki sent his statement on September 2011 stating that he held a meeting with youth on that day but denied that Mungiki were present. Machira, whose music business went bust yesterday told how he arranged for the groups - OKA (Operation Kibaki Again) Warembo na Kibaki and Kibaki Tena - to State House for a meeting with senior bureaucrats.
Machira refused to reveal whether the members of these groups were Mungiki members. He however expressed concerns for his security. "I can confirm that I was used and dumped by these senior government officials and exposing the facts and coming out to shed some light means death. However, even if I am today executed, my story is with my friends and they cannot all be killed or reached to cover up," he said in a statement in which he claimed he had actively participated in 2007 PNU Presidential Campaign and was the coordinator of the three groups.
He said he had not reported any threats to the police or any security agency. Machira ran the collapsed music production house W.de.jey Productions. Apart from being named by Ocampo as the PNU/Mungiki linkman, his name also appears in the official list released by the government of the people who visited State House on that date. He is listed as part of the OKA delegation.
The list of 33 people was released in February by Police commissioner Mathewto dismiss Ocampo's claims that Mungiki visited State House. The delegation of OKA members who went to the State House meeting and who were led by Machira included Maina Kang'ethe alias Maina Diambo; Godwin Kamau, also known as Godwin Wangoe Kamau; Anthony Kamau, also known as Anthony Gikura Kamau and Amos Kamande. The Star has established that Maina Diambo was the Nairobi coordinator for Mungiki and the acting leader of Mungiki while Maina Njenga was in jail. Amos Kamande was the Mungiki coordinator for Kayole.
The full list of people who visited State house that was released by police commisisoner Mathew Iteere on January 27 inclludes: Martha Wangare, Naisiae Karia, Beryl Oyier, Lydia Martha, Patrick Ngatia, Joseph Kioko, Sakaja Johnstone, Job Wamalwa, Andrew Wakahiu, Thomas Mbewa, Jonathan Katiku, Yvonne Khamati , Leon Ndubai; James Mathenge; Jack Wamboka, Evans Gor Semilango, Patrick Kokonya, George Nyongesa, Ken Orengo, Badi Ali, Kamau Mugo, James Munene, Nahashon Maina, Mary Githinji, Godfrey Machira, Godwin Kamau, Maina Kangethe, Anthony Kamau, Hosiah Mwangi, Amos Kamande, Nelson Githaiga, Mwende Mwinzi and Leeh Nyachae.
Yesterday Machira said he did not wish to talk about cases pending at the ICC against Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and former Head of Public Service ambassador Francis Muthaura. "On allegations touching on PEV , I wish not to discuss since the matter is at the ICC" he said in his statement. The ICC judges have stated that they approached Kibaki's denial with reservations as he is alleged to have participated in the meeting.
The judges said the meeting was confirmed “to the requisite threshold and in considerable detail”adding that others who allegedly attended the meeting were then State House Comptroller Hyslop Ipu, Presidential Press Service head Isaya Kabira, Stanley Murage, Uhuru Kenyatta and Muthaura. According to the ICC judges , Muthaura reportedly introduced the Mungiki as "youth" and a sect representative then presented their demands on behalf of Maina Njenga, who was then in jail, in exchange for the sect's support for the President.
“After hearing the Mungiki demands, the President addressed Mr. Muthaura telling him something to the effect of: “You have heard what the youth want, so now it is upon you,” the judges quoted a witness as saying. Yesterday , Machira revealed that he had written to eight senior government officials including the State house Comptroller to seek for audience with President Kibaki in regard to the Post Election Violence cases pending at the Hague and also his "miserable ' life after he was named by the ICC.
Machira is considered a potential defence witness. Machira said he had three DVDs of him and the people whom he worked with during the PNU meetings in different parts of the country ahead of the 2007 General elections. He said the DVDs were meant to prove that he was actively involved in the PNU presidential campaigns.
Other top government officials whom he has written seeking audience with include the NSIS Director Michael Gichangi , Police commissioner Iteere, Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister Eugene Wamalwa, Internal Security PS Mutea Iringo, Attorney General Githu Muigai. He has copied the letter to Justice and Constitution Affairs PS Gichira Kibara and Mathira MP Ephraim Maina and former Mungiki leader now a born again preacher Maina Njenga. The letters were all sent on August 23 through the Wells Fargo courier service.
In the letters to the government officials, Machira explains the reason for seeking urgent audience as "in regard to the 2007 PNU presidential Campaign and the 2007/2008 post poll chaos and the criminal cases pending at the Hague against the four kenya suspects." Those facing criminal charges at the ICC include former head of Public Service Francis Muthaura , Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta , radio journalist Joshua Arap Sang and Eldoret North MP William Ruto.
Machira said he had decided to speak out about the November 26 meeting because he has been unable to get in touch with the government officials to discuss the cases before the ICC. Machira said he has not reported any threats to his life to the police or any security agency.
