Apathy and violence spoil Ndhiwa voting

• On Monday, eight people, who attacked a Kanu agent in Magina Village on Sunday night were charged with robbery with violence before Ndhiwa magistrate Bernard Omwanza. They denied the charge and were freed on Sh500,000 bond and surety of the same amount.
• They were accused of violently robbing Mr David Otieno Gor and Mr Maurice Odhiambo Mumbo. Hearing was fixed for October 8, with mention slated on October 1.
• At least two people were admitted to hospital with panga cuts from suspected political violence at the Magina centre. ODM candidate Agustino Neto said it was unfortunate some people had resorted to violence.

Low voter turnout, violence and claims of attempted rigging marred voting in the Ndhiwa by-election on Monday.

A handful of voters trickled into polling stations as aspirants and their agents took it upon themselves to get them out to vote.

Elsewhere, TNA candidate Rosemary Atieno Rumo, who was expected to cast her vote at 6.30am, kept journalists waiting at Akala Polling station.

She said one of her campaign managers mandated to prepare letters for her agents at the polling stations had failed to do so, forcing presiding officers to throw them out.

She rushed to the IEBC offices at the last minute to get copies of the documents, which were later certified by a magistrate.

In Kasipul Kabondo constituency, scores of people were arrested following reports of violence in parts of Wire/Migwa Ward.

At Nyamwaga polling station in Wang’chieng’ ward, a spouse of a candidate hired as a polling clerk was ejected over conflict of interest while at Otondo in the same ward, a man was arrested over alleged voter bribery.

Nyatwere and Karabok polling stations in Wire were some of the polling centres that witnessed violence.
