IN SUMMARY
  • Peter Mwangi is disgusted about the latest threats from the City Council to seize defaulters’ houses.
  • Kenyatta National Hospital torments relatives and patients on being discharged by demanding that they pay the exact amount in their bills, moans S. Karumba.
  • The most disgusting TV advert Festus Mbuimwe has seen in a long time, he declares, must be the one for a brand of toothpaste, showing bloody spit in one part and a clear one in the other.
A MATTER OF INNOCENCE. Should Industrialisation minister Henry Kosgey not be trumpeting his innocence over the post-2007 election violence instead of merely crediting his competent lawyers for getting him off the hook at the ICC several months ago? asks a terribly disappointed Taabu Tele. “While Kosgey’s humility and tact devoid of the unnecessary drama of other suspects may have earned him accolades, equating his acquittal to his innocence would, of course, have been much better,” he adds. His contact is taabu.tele@outlook.com.

TITLE DEED NIGHTMARE. Many property owners in Nairobi are willing to pay their land rates, but cannot, and squarely to blame is the Ministry of Lands, says Peter Mwangi, disgusted about the latest threats from the City Council to seize defaulters’ houses. “The processing of title deeds is a nightmare. I have since July last year followed up my title to Nairobi Block 82/4521 from Harambee Sacco in vain. They instead accuse the ministry of delaying the release of the title. Can I pay my land rates without this document?” asks Peter, whose contact is pkmwangi73@yahoo.com.

STRANGE POLICY. Kenyatta National Hospital torments relatives and patients on being discharged by demanding that they pay the exact amount in their bills, moans S. Karumba. Even the pharmacy insists on the exact amount. “Nobody knows in advance what the bill will be to be able to get the exact cash,” says Festus, adding that he could not convince the cashier to round off the figure. “The cashier would not accept a shilling for 95 cents, arguing that it’s against KNH policy. In the end, she threw the money back at me,” says Karumba. His contact is Tel 0723850121.

YUCKIEST ADVERT OF THE YEAR. The most disgusting TV advert Festus Mbuimwe has seen in a long time, he declares, must be the one for a brand of toothpaste, showing bloody spit in one part and a clear one in the other. If there was a competition to pick the Yuckiest Advert of the Year, Festus says, this one, which has been running on TV in the recent past, would easily have won. “Surely, couldn’t the manufacturer have asked professionals to come up with a more creative way to promote their brand?” asks Festus, whose contact is fmbuimwe@gmail.com.

MISLEADING. The Thika superhighway has beautiful road signage, showing the distances between the various towns, but it contains misleading information, says Nick Mwenda. The sign at Roysambu, he adds, indicates that the distance to Mombasa is 352km, while Kisumu is 356km away, which is not true. “Kisumu is not farther from Roysambu than Mombasa. A billboard at Nyayo National Stadium shows that Mombasa is actually 495km from Nairobi. Can those responsible correct this?” urges Nick, whose contact is nickmwenda@gmail.com.

BAD EXAMPLE. A few days ago, Vincent Chepkwony stood in Nairobi’s city centre, waiting for a friend and found himself counting, within a span of eight minutes, about 10 government vehicles that took an illegal turn into Kenyatta Avenue from Posta Road. He captured most of them on camera and tweeted the police, but they did not even acknowledge receipt. “It is sad to see the drivers of sleek GK cars breaking the rules when they should set a good example.” If whoever is in charge of government transport is interested, Vincent still has the pictures. His contact is vkiprotich@gmail.com.
Have an exemplary day, won’t you!
