SHAME: Tanzanian youth watched ‘mothers’ DIE and asked for bribes

Monday, August 13, 2012 - Recently the DAILY POST published a story on how youths in Mombasa idle around black spots waiting for accidents to rob off dying victims. The trend seems to have been borrowed by our neighbors in Tanzania.

When the grisly accident that claimed the lives of 14 women occurred, youths and residents surrounded the accident scene but did not help. They asked for bribes so that they may help them.

According to one of the survivors the youth did not rob from them but just stared and asked them to pay some money. This came as a shock to the traumatized mothers who watched their colleagues die and others with serious injuries crying for help.

The accident occurred at Mandere area in Tanga. Police in Tanzania reported that at least 40 other people had been injured and were attended to at local hospitals in the area before they were airlifted to Kenya for medical treatment after President Kibaki ordered the Kenya Air force to do so.

Most of the victims were members of Happy Valley P.C.E.A. church in Thika and were headed to Tanzania for a meeting. The victims were in two busses.

Survivors said that one of the busses skid off the road and the second bus stopped. As they were helping the passengers of the first bus, a speeding lorry hit the stationary bus prompting it to fall on the other bus and crashing the passengers helping.

The government issued a statement saying it will cover for all the medical and funeral expenses bills of the victims involved in the accident.
