SHAME: NHIF CEO embezzled Sh 465 million in 2 MONTHS

Wednesday august 15, 2012-It seems the corruption dogma in the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is far from over.

The DAILY POST can now reveal that the acting Chief Executive Officer of NHIF Adan A Adan has stolen Sh 465 million from the Nation Insurance carrier.

The revelations were made on Tuesday by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and the Kenya Medical Association (KMA) who engaged in a war of words with the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) caretaker committee.

The two organisations claimed part of the money had been lost through per diems and sitting allowances paid to its caretaker committee members whose term had been brought to an end by a court order. Other monies, they said, have been paid as salaries of illegally recruited new staff.

They also claimed that the NHIF board made several foreign trips to the United States at a cost of Sh 10 million to advertise NHIF policies to one of America’s local dailies.

It is estimated that the advertisement fee costed the taxpayer’s Sh 3. 7 million, a week for one month-that translates to Sh 15 million per month.

The NHIF caretaker board has been in office for less than 3 months and close to half a billion shillings has been unaccounted for.

Before the appointment of the care taker board, Medical Service Minister Prof Anyang Nyongo and former CEO Richard Kerich squandered billions of shillings through illegal payments to ghost clinics.

It is alleged that Prof Anyang Nyongo, who is also ODM Secretary General, wired Sh 900 million to his private accounts in Jersey and Cayman islands.
