The Party of National Unity will field a presidential candidate despite reports that it would support Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta’s bid for the top seat.
Party secretary-general Amos Kimunya on Sunday called on interested candidates who would like to vie for various seats, including the presidency, to apply.
“PNU is calling for all aspirants who wish to contest the 2013 General Election on our party ticket to attend an aspirants’ meeting at the party headquarters on September 7, 2012,” Mr Kimunya, who is also the Minister for Transport, said in an advertisement.
The notice also said aspirants can send their applications to the party headquarters between today and the date.
Separate candidates
The party was previously led by former Internal Security minister George Saitoti, who died in a helicopter crash on June 10.
Earlier in the month, Mr Kenyatta reportedly got the backing of three political parties, including the PNU, in his bid for the presidency. PNU, Grand National Union headed by assistant minister Mwangi Kiunjuri, the Alliance Party of Kenya led by Energy Minister Kiraitu Murungi and Mr Kenyatta’s The National Alliance signed a coalition agreement to support the DPM’s candidature.
The agreement is said to have been the culmination of months of negotiations among the four parties.
The agreement, however, did not bar PNU, GNU and APK from fielding candidates for other seats.
