NO arrest for ATWOLI – At least for NOW

NO arrest for ATWOLI – At least for NOW

Wednesday August 8, 2012 - Central Organisation of Trade Union (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has appealed against a decision by a judge to issue a warrant of arrest against him for contempt of court.

Through his Lawyer Tom Kajwang, Atwoli said he was dissatisfied with the decision and wants the appeal court to review it.

“I have filed the notice and we shall be moving to the Court of Appeal soon,” Kajwang said.

High Court Judge Isaac Lenaola last week ruled that his actions and that of the Kenya Plantation and Agricultural Workers Union (KPAWU) to incite workers to go on strike had disregarded court orders.

On October 14 last year, Atwoli mobilised (KPAWU) and tea workers to strike aver introduction of tea picking machines in tea plantations in Kericho and Nandi.

The Secretary General argued that the introduction of tea picking machines will create unemployment in tea growing areas.
