An MP has vowed to mobilise the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leadership to ensure that the party wins the Ndhiwa constituency by-election.
Martin Ogindo, who is the ODM's vice chairman in Homa Bay County, said the party’s flagbearer in the polls, Agostinho Neto, will retain the seat.
“We will mobilise ODM bigwigs and members to ensure the seat is retained,” said Mr Ogindo.
Prime Minister Raila Odinga is the party leader, while Industrialisation minister Henry Kosgey is the ODM chairman.
The Ndhiwa seat fell vacant after the death of Orwa Ojode, the internal security assistant minister, in a plane crash on June 10.
Mr Ogindo congratulated Mr Neto on his victory and gave a thumbs-up to the Ndhiwa constituents “for conducting peaceful nominations that largely reflects their will".
The MP did not mention the skirmishes that rocked the nominations, and which the party termed as “isolated cases”.
ODM’s National Election Board (NEB) secretary, Joseph Misoi, said there was a problem at Ratanga polling station after rowdy youths accosted officers and destroyed electoral materials.
He, however, said the situation had been brought under control and fresh ballot papers sent to the polling station and voting started immediately.

Mr Neto was declared winner of the Ndhiwa constituency ODM nominations early Tuesday with 4,277 votes. He defeated 22 other candidates who wanted the party’s ticket.
The by-elections are slated for September 17.
