Kajwang PROMISES that ID cards are FREE

Wednesday August 8, 2012 - Kenyans who are seeking identification cards (ID) have a reason to smile after Immigration Minister Otieno Kajwang said the government will issue identity cards free of charge.

Kajwang said the government has lifted the Sh 300 fee to acquire or replace the ID card from August this year.

“To obtain an ID, whether lost one or new one, is free. Report those who ask for money to the police and we will take it up from there,” Kajwang said.

The move came barely a day after President Mwai Kibaki and Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka expressed their dissatisfaction over the Sh 300 ID fees.

Kibaki requested the Immigration Minister to waive the fee to millions of youths who are eligible to apply for ID cards.

Kibaki said it is a right for every Kenyan to have an ID card without being charged a penny.
It is estimated that over 3 million Kenyans who have reached 18 year of age, have no identity cards.
