EXCLUSIVE: Government and IEBC on BVR

EXCLUSIVE: Government and IEBC on BVR

THE government and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) have agreed to stick with the Biometric system for registering voters.

It emerged in the closed-door meeting that the Canadian gvt has offered to help on the matter and will give the kits, meaning the gruesome tender process will be shelved for this to work.

Further the provision that all voter registration must come to an end 90 days before the date of elections, will be reviewed to be 45 days.

On Tuesday last week the Orange Democratic Party (ODM) held a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Raila Odinga where they said the party had agreed that IEBC reverts to the old manual system.

“As a party, we are greatly concerned of the controversy which has followed the IEBC tender and we unequivocally reject the process and call for its termination,” ODM Parliamentary group secretary Ababu Namwamba told reporters while reading a statement by the meeting.

Party Chairman Henry Kosgey on his part said, “We better face reality and say this is a critical process every Kenyan must be confident of. It is better we go back to the manual system and start the registration of voters now.”
