Council rebury bodies exhumed by dogs

By Job Weru
Nanyuki Municipal Council has reburied 43 bodies exhumed from a shallow grave early this week at Thingithu public cemetery. Residents raised the alarm after they found dogs feasting on some bodies.
At the same time, Mayor Isaac Mathenge warned he would take stern action against workers who interred the bodies irregularly.
Speaking during reburial of the bodies at the cemetery on Tuesday evening,
Mathenge said the workers were paid Sh10,000 by the local authority to collect the bodies from Nanyuki District Hospital mortuary and inter them properly.
“It is unfortunate that they dug a shallow grave, leading to their exhumation by dogs,” he said.
On Tuesday, officials led by Laikipia East Public Health officer Samson Marangu and police led by OCPD Joshua Lutukai ordered an immediate reburial to end public outcry.
