Clergymen urged to preach peace in East Africa

Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has urged religious based organisations to strengthen their role of promoting peace among various communities in East Africa.

Mr Musyoka urged the church to pray for the nation as it prepares for the General Election.

“We need to correct the past mistakes that nearly plunged the country into political turmoil after the 2007/8 General Elections," he said.

He assured that the forthcoming elections would be peaceful, noting that Kenyans have learnt a lesson and will not allow chaos to mar an important event in the democratic calendar of this nation.

Mr Musyoka was addressing the 12th session of the United Methodist Conference held at the Methodists Guest House, Kileleshwa in Nairobi.

The regional Conference brings together the Church leaders from six countries in East, Central and Southern Africa.

The theme of the conference is “Making Disciples of Jesus Christ to transform the world.”

It was hosted by Bishop In-Charge of East Africa, Rev Daniel Wandabura from Burundi.

Mr Musyoka said that it is time for African people to take their rightful place in the global society, saying the continent is in a better position to claim the 21st century.

He said it is encouraging that countries which have experienced civil strives in the Great Lakes Region and Sudan have redeemed themselves of the wars and were now focusing on rebuilding their countries.

He expressed hope that soon Somalia will be able too to realise a lasting peace.
