There was panic on Nkrumah road in Mombasa yesterday when a man left a well-strapped brown carton box outside Citi Bank opposite Furaha Plaza. Guards manning the bank called police from the Scene of Crime department. According to witnesses, a man dressed in a navy blue kaunda suit left the box outside the bank and entered Furaha Plaza.
However, the man returned only to find police who had already secured the area. The man was forced to open the box to reveal an item that he said belonged to his boss, a Mehul Patel. The item was a casing believed to be some sort of decoration usually found in temples. “The casing was being taken to our offices in Nyali. It was going for repair because it has been damaged,” said the man.
Pedestrians praised the police for their quick response saying nothing should be left to chance. Kenya has been witnessing increased terror attacks in the recent past. “This is how we should be. Even if it was nothing serious, the kind of response shown by the citizens and the police was impressive,” said Juma Mcharo, a pedestrian. However, several people had passed the carton box without noticing it or without questioning its strangeness.
