ROGUE kanjo are extorting innocent Nairobians MONEY

Sunday, July 21st 2012--Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and officers drawn from the Council of Nairobi yesterday quashed an extortionist cartel involving the NCC staff, former council employee and a rogue officer.

The three were conducting their well-organized sting operation demanding money from a motorist for allegedly flouting council by-laws when they were nabbed by the officers. The two council askaris were one Dedan Irungu, a council employee based at Uhuru Highway and his partner in crime Nicholas Siva, a former council employee.

The DAILY POST is yet to establish whether the other man identified as Martin Andego is a police officer. The Assistant Town Clerk Daniel Masetu said that the behavior has become rampant with council askaris choosing to ask for money from people instead of taking the required procedure.

The EACC officers confiscated the negotiated amount of sh 3,000 and hand cuffs and took the three to the EACC headquarters for further grilling.

The suspects were caught as they tried to escape right in the heart of the central business district in Latama road.

The victim told the DAILY POST that initially the suspects had demanded for sh 8,000 however lowered the amount to sh 3,000 after negotiation.

Masetu said that the council is working closely with the EACC to fill in the loopholes of massive revenue leakage through cartels.
