NO BEER on election week - MUTUTHO

NO BEER on election week - MUTUTHO

Tuesday July 24, 2012 - Naivasha MP John Mututho is proposing three days of prohibition leading up to and including the date of the general election, during which no one will be allowed to sell or buy alcohol.

The Naivasha legislator, who is famous for “Mututho laws” which set tough restrictions on beer sale and consumptions, wants the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act amended to cut the beer consumption during the election week.

Mututho believes that the proposed measures will ensure voters are sober enough to cast their ballots on polling day.

“I will be asking the approval of parliament to amend the laws so that during the election time for three days all liquor licenses will be suspended for Kenyans to vote with a sober mind,” Mututho said.

The controversial MP said the practice has worked in other countries like Venezuela where alcohol and other stimulants are banned for a week during voting.

Mututho said he will seek to amend the law further to have all places, including supermarkets, off license establishments and private members’ clubs adhere to drinking hours of 5 pm to 11 pm on weekdays and 2 pm to 11 pm on weekends.

He also wants nightclubs to operate strictly from 7 pm to 3 am.
