The government has directed district security and intelligence committees in Coast province to be on high alert on the activities of the outlawed Mombasa Republican Council and inflammatory utterances from politicians.
Kisauni District Commissioner Tom Anjere said chiefs have also been ordered to mobilise thousands of youth who have attained the age of 18 to acquire national identity cards and subsequently register as voters.
Speaking at the launch of the Independent and Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IIEBC) brand identity Thursday, Mr Anjere said the government will not sit back and let MRC cause disharmony in the region.
“Adequate security will also be accorded to the officers of the electoral body so that they can enjoy a secure working environment especially in the forthcoming voter registration exercise,” said Mr Anjere at the function held at Mombasa Beach Hotel.
The DC, who represented the provincial commissioner Samuel Kilele said all the 23 districts security and intelligence committees have been directed to work closely with the National Cohesion and Integrations Commission (NCIC) to clampdown on politicians bent on spreading hate speech.
“We are ready to work with the cohesion team to monitor inflammatory utterances that would create a sense of instability in the region and firmly deal with those found to create disharmony,” said the DC.
He challenged the youth to shun MRC's activities and come out in large number to register as voters and elect leaders who address perennial issues facing residents.
“Currently there are about 40,000 uncollected identity cards lying at the Kongowea registration of persons office. I am aware of people telling residents not to register as voters but we shall ask them not to be swayed,” he said.

Amina Soud, the south west Coast regional IEBC coordinator, also appealed to Coast residents to be wary of any campaigns to have them create chaos during the electioneering period.
“Whoever messes up with this peaceful atmosphere we are all enjoying now will not be doing injustice to himself but to all of us. Please help us to preach peace among our people,” she stated.
Mrs Soud, who was flanked by the 12 constituency electoral coordinators, from her region further appealed to residents to turn up in large numbers and register as voters once the next voter registration exercise begins countrywide.
