Some ODM delegates in Nairobi county are said to be pushing their chairman George Aladwa to decamp from the Orange party. The delegates who met last week at the Boulevard Hotel, are unhappy with the manner in which the party leader Raila Odinga has been interfering with the affairs of the county office in Lavington area. Other county branches that are experiencing wrangling are Kisii, Nyamira, Mombasa and Homa Bay. The discontent follows the flawed grassroots pools early this year, where a camp led by Housing assistant minister Margaret Wanjiru lost to Aladwa's group.
However, the camp led by Aladwa was last week summoned by the PM to his office and  ordered to work with the Wanjiru group "for the sake of the party's unity", according to sources within the branch allied to Aladwa. However, mayor has denied the claims, adding that his group is working well with the Starehe MP.
He denied claims of a simmering row in the Nairobi county office saying as a founder member of ODM, he was in the party to stay. “I will fight from within the party as a democrat,” he said before hanging up the phone. Unconfirmed reports indicate that Aladwa was directed to ask some of his office bearers to relinquish some top office positions to the Wanjiru camp.
Aladwa and Wanjiru later addressed the Nairobi delegates at the Bomas of Kenya accompanied by party chairman Henry Kosgey, where they pledged to work together, but it seems underlying issues were not sorted out. “The PM is wrecking the party from within. He blows hot and cold every-time we meet him and that is why we are asking Aladwa, who is our chairman in the city to look for a plan B because our trust with the party leader is waning. If he (Aladwa) does not heed our advise to decamp, he will be in for a rude shock when it matters most,” said a top Nairobi ODM official, who sought anonymity.
The official accused civil servants in the PM's office of issuing instructions to party supporters and delegates. “It's very sad that someone who draws his salary from the public coffers is trying to issue directives to some of us, yet we were duly elected in rigorous elections early this year. These are some of the people coalescing around the PM, but add no value to his presidential bid,” added our source.
The latest casualty is former city mayor Geoffrey Majiwa, who until last week was the Nairobi ODM secretary, before he was pushed to resign from the position to pave way for a Wanjiru ally. “In elections, we have winners and losers, as Miguna Miguna says, the issue of harmonisation was forced down on Kenyans by London and Washington and its unfortunate that our party leader (Raila) is using the same gimmicks on the party elections,” added  the source.
