A clash is looming between some MPs in Central Kenya and Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta after they accused his party of arrogance.
The politicians, who are allied to parties with strongholds in Central Kenya have asked Mr Kenyatta’s The National Alliance to stop treating their parties like they are inferior to it.
The leaders, who are drawn from the Democratic Party, Grand National Union and Alliance Party of Kenya said that all parties were “equal in the eyes of the law and should be respected.”
“All parties are equal in law and therefore must accord other parties respect,” the group said in a statement read by Siakago MP Lenny Kivuti after a lunch time meeting at Panafric Hotel.
In response, TNA chairman Johnson Sakaja said that TNA was a competitor in the next election with all other parties but was open to coalitions.
“If we find we have similar ideologies, then the law provides for avenues on how this can be achieved. But it is too early and we as TNA are working as a party and respect the rights of all the other parties,” Mr Sakaja said.
At Panafric, Energy Minister Kiraitu Murungi said that TNA was like any other party in the country and should therefore not be seen to have a superior role of bringing together those who support Mr Kenyatta.
“Like GNU, DP and APK, TNA is an individual political party registered like the rest. Parties come together in coalitions on shared ideologies with a common goal and we are ready to work with all other parties including TNA,” Mr Murungi said.
Their statement is a response to comments by Kikuyu MP Lewis Nguyai, a close ally of Mr Kenyatta, that all other parties that support the DPM should dissolve themselves and join TNA.
Mr Nguyai’s remarks have elicited outrage among politicians who have warned that TNA should not be “a political bully”.
