Members of Parliament will on Thursday troop to Mombasa for a high level national conference on peace ahead of the next General Election.
President Kibaki, Prime Minister Raila Odinga and National Assembly Speaker Kenneth Marende will lead the legislators to the conference organised by the Ministry of Justice.
Among topic for discussions during the three-day conference dubbed ‘ the National Conference and County Forum on Peaceful Elections’ are the importance of peace during and after the polls, role of legislators in peace building and national cohesion and the role of the Judiciary in promoting peaceful elections.
Besides the President, PM and the Speaker other key speakers will be Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission Chairman Isaack Hassan and representatives of civil society organisations.
National Cohesion and Integration Commission Chairman Mzalendo Kibunja will address the meeting on strategies they have put in place to curb hate speech during the electoral process. Government and other stakeholders have been spearheading the call for peaceful elections to avert a repeat of post-election violence.
Former Head of Civil Service Francis Muthaura, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Eldoret North MP William Ruto and radio journalist Joshua arap Sang are facing crimes against humanity charges at the International Criminal Court in The Hague in connection with the violence.
The conference organisers plan to hold series of conferences in the next few months for peace building purposes ahead of the General Election.
