Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Friday warned the Gema and Kamatusa groupings that their days were numbered as they had nothing new to offer.
Speaking at Embu, Chuka and Nkubu towns at the start of a two-day campaign tour of Meru County, Mr Odinga likened those spearheading the groupings to the dictators who were recently overthrown in North Africa and the Middle East.
He left the crowd in stitches when he likened wananchi being urged to join Gema and Kamatusa to a donkey which was ready to rebel against its owner for being overburdened with work.
“Tell the Gema and Kamatusa leaders that the donkey is now tired,” he said. (READ:Kalenjin leaders meet over political future)
Mr Raila repeated the remarks at Ntemwene village where he laid the foundation stone for Ntemwene dispensary.
He was accompanied by Immigration minister Otieno Kajwang’ and MPs Gitobu Imanyara (Imenti Central), Ababu Namwamba (Bundalang’i), Manson Nyamweya (Soth Mugirango), Millie Odhiambo (nominated) and former legislator Maoka Maore.
Mr Odinga dismissed claims that he had been isolated in ODM, saying he still had his key supporters around him.
ODM activist Mpuru Aburi said parts of Meru had been sidelined by their Imenti counterparts and suggested that Mr Odinga was best suited to accord the community equal treatment.
Mr Maore urged the Ameru to support Mr Odinga after President Kibaki left office.
“We don’t have a presidential candidate as President Kibaki is retiring. Let us support Mr Odinga,” he appealed.
Mr Odinga promised to ensure that streets in Chuka town was tarmacked before the end of the year and pledged support for the construction of Ntemwene health centre.
“It used to be as if the government was feeling pity on its people by offering services. People had to cry to the central government to serve them yet they paid taxes.”
Mr Odinga said he was best suited to implement the Constitution since he had supported it in the referendum.
“The Constitution will only be implemented by those who have faith in it. Those who were call themselves red card and watermelons will not be so enthusiastic in implementing it. Beware of such people, he said.
