Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta will name the party that he will run for the presidency on April 23, it emerged on Friday.
Mr Kenyatta, the Kanu chairman, declared on Thursday that he will not be seeking re-election for the position.
On Friday, Mr Kenyatta’s allies remained cagey with details of the party, but his spokesman Munyori Buku assured that the DPM will name his party in “10 days” from Friday.
Mr Buku said his boss understands the anxiety of his supporters but added that Mr Kenyatta had sought to consult widely.
“On March 23, the DPM promised and pledged to name his party in 30 days. There is still another 10 days. This decision is not about him as an individual but has to do with his supporters and other like-minded political parties,” Mr Buku said.
He, however, declined to confirm whether Mr Kenyatta was moving to the National Alliance Party of Kenya though some of his allies have indicated that he has also held talks with UDF, PNU Alliance, DP and GNU.
Meanwhile, Kanu will on Saturday hold a controversial National Delegates’ Conference expected to adopt a new constitution that will slash the powers of the party’s chairman.
This is the key agenda that will see the party make a move to ensure it is not de-registered at the end of the month. The party will also review progress made in the compliance with the Political Parties Act.
Party secretary-general Nick Salat, while indicating that 98 per cent of the delegates have confirmed attendance, termed the future of the party as “devastating” if they lack quorum.
