Six killed, police decry high death toll on road

By CYRUS OMBATI
Six people were Sunday evening killed in a grisly road accident along Thika Road in Nairobi.
The 4pm accident involved a matatu and a lorry of a Chinese firm constructing the road at the GSU drift. The matatu was headed to Thika Town.
Nairobi Area head of traffic Patrick Lumumba said it was heavily raining when the accident happened.
"The driver is among the deceased and it was raining when he rammed onto a stationary lorry at this drift. He must have been moving at high speed given the impact witnessed," he said.
Seven injured
Seven others were seriously injured in the accident and were rushed to the Neema Hospital few kilometres away.
Doctors there said they had multiple injuries.
The accident caused a heavy traffic jam along the busy highway as police moved in to manage the flow using a single lane.
Lumumba urged drivers using the road to be cautious because of the ongoing rains and the fact that it is still under construction.
"Mind you the road is yet to be marked but you find drivers moving at high speed. The coming of rains has worsened things," he said.
Lumumba said the deaths were highest on the road since its construction began almost two years ago.
The superhighway he added needs a lot of re-orientation for drivers to be able to master it well.
Pedestrian walks
Pedestrian walks are yet to be completed on the highway.
Meanwhile, a son to rights activist Gladwell Otieno was killed in a road accident in Nairobi.
He was driving when his car was involved in an accident with another private four-wheel drive car along Waiyaki Way on Sunday morning.
