Corridors of Power

AN ODM lawmaker has earned himself the moniker Bull of the Millennium. Reason? He has made 26 schoolgirls pregnant, out of 60 who he had offered to pay school fees for. The man, who is known to be generous and outgoing, seems to have taken advantage of the girls whose parents are too poor to pay their school fees. Unfortunately for the girls, they seem to be getting the kind of education which they had not bargained for.

Troubles in Kanu seem to be far from over. After the exit of Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta last week, the party's executive director Joseph Mathai and several other staff members have decided to follow suit. And to complicate matters for the country's oldest political party, the landlord of the party's headquarters in Nairobi has threatened to kick it out for nonpayment of rent.

A senior official within the intelligence service has been kicked out for dereliction of duty. However some of his colleagues insist he was sacked for giving a report which was not in line with what his bosses wanted to hear. We are told the man was detailed to find out the public perception of some senior politicians and put together a dossier on what the public thought about the same in regard to the next election. It seems the officer presented a report which contradicted the opinion his bosses held, and for that he lost his job. Talk about shooting the messenger!

A High Court judge and some lawyers are getting jittery over the "illegitimate" powers they claim one of their own has amassed in a short period. The frustrated judge was overheard complaining that the lawyer had in recent months acquired so much power in the administration of justice that it negated the very idea of an independent judiciary. According to the judge, the lawyer seems to have the backing of some powers to the extent that he intimidates judges who do not deliver favourable rulings in favour of his clients. It seems the cases handled by the lawyer's firm are always fast-tracked to avoid getting a complaint from him!
