Presidential hopeful Martha Karua’s Narc-Kenya has become the first political party to be fully registered as the rush to beat the April 30 deadline intensifies.
Acting Political Parties Registrar Lucy Ndung’u said on Thursday Narc-Kenya had met all the requirements in compliance with the Political Parties Act and would be given a certificate of registration on Friday.
“We have been perusing their documents for the past one month and we are satisfied (with them),” Ms Ndung’u said.
The other parties that have submitted their applications are Patriotic Party of Kenya, National Vision Party, Labour Party of Kenya, GNU, Restore and Build Kenya, United Democratic Forum Party and Party of Independent Candidates of Kenya.
The Act requires that a political party will only be registered if its membership reflects the regional and ethnic diversity.
There are about 50 political parties in the country.
Each is required to present a list of 1,000 members from 24 counties, two copies of the party constitution, a list of executive committee officials and original certificate and the physical address of the organisation’s headquarters and branches in 24 counties to the Registrar.
Other conditions stipulate that the party constitution must spell out the organisation’s name, slogan, colours, symbol and objectives.

The party should also have no more than two-thirds of officials belonging to the same gender.
Ms Ndung’u said her office was verifying the lists of members presented by the parties before issuing those which comply with certificates.
She also said that her office, which falls under the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, would not extend the deadline.
“There will be no extension to the deadline and parties which will not have complied will be struck off the register,” she said.
