A section of ODM leaders from Mt Kenya region have promised to back a youthful leader for the deputy party leader in the forthcoming party nominations. Yesterday, the leaders said in the absence of the Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi, they will front George Thuranira who is aspiring for the seat. Murang’a county ODM coordinator Alex Irungu said the aspirant, who hails from Meru, was best placed to take over the seat from Mudavadi who is running for ODM’s presidential candidate.
Speaking in Murang’a, Irungu said the youth need to support one of their own. “We want someone who will represent our interests and aspirations at the national leavel,” he said. He said the youth form the largest percentage of the party members and hence one of their own should ascend to the national leadership.
Thuranira said he was ready to fight it out for the post with other candidates. “I will compete for the ODM deputy party leader in the oncoming national delegates nomination and I am sure I will get it,” he said. The aspirant said he will bank on the youth votes and other delegates from Mt Kenya region to win the seat. He said although he does not have enough money to run the campaigns, he has been able to visit over 20 counties all over the country to woo the delegates in his favour.
The ODM official at the same time challenged the youth to vie for elective seat in the forthcoming general election. While expressing his fear he said if the group would shy away from the posts those who will get in power might use their influence to frustrate the youth agenda.“We must ensure that we will be in the top leaders to ensure that our voice is also heard and that no leader will ever ignore our existence as it has been over the years. Thuranira at the same time cautioned the youth against engaging in tribal politics which blamed for the 2007-08 post election violence.
