The role of Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta in the coalition government has come under sharp focus after he skipped last week’s Cabinet meeting.
It was not immediately clear why Mr Kenyatta skipped the meeting despite retaining his position as the DPM. (READ:Uhuru: I will not quit as deputy PM)
“We have had only one Cabinet meeting since he stepped down but he did not attend.
“I’m not sure whether he stayed away on his own volition or with the permission of the two principals,” said a Cabinet minister who requested anonymity because he is on oath not to disclose Cabinet secrets.
Mr Kenyatta’s aides declined to be drawn into discussing his absence, but confirmed that he had not been to the Finance ministry since he stepped down as minister.
“He no longer operates from Treasury,” his spokesman Munyori Buku said.
Mr Buku declined to say where Mr Kenyatta is operating from, but close aides, including the spokesman, are still based at the Treasury because they are civil servants seconded to the DPM.
