Musician Stella Mwangi yesterday said she had no objection to efforts being made by her the colleagues of her late father Jeff Mwangi, to raise funds for his burial. The Hula Hoop singer was responding to concerns raised by Onyango Oloo, a member of the funeral committee in Nairobi.
“Jeff Mwangi, Onyango Oloo and Wahinya Boore were among the university students who were arrested, tortured and jailed by the Moi-KANU regime in the aftermath of the attempted 1982 coup. We spent many years together as political prisoners at the infamous Kamiti Maximum Security penitentiary on the outskirts of Nairobi and have remained steadfast comrades ever since," said Oloo in an email.
Other members of the Nairobi funeral committee include Jeff Mwangi's cousins, John Maina Mwangi and Maina Chege and a family friend from Norway, Melissa Awero. The committee has been soliciting for funds from individuals and corporates to help with the funeral. Two of the members had earlier travelled to Iregi village, Maragua, Muranga County to Jeff Mwangi's parents who endorsed their fundraising efforts. The committee handed over the money they had collected to the parents on Thursday.
“I respect that they know my dad that way and that they are fund raising but what l’m not okay with is them using my name. It looks bad. It seems like I can’t do it (afford to bury my father),” Stella said. Her manager had on Wednesday alleged that STL and her mother, Perpetua had distanced themselves from the fund raising efforts. Jeff Mwangi will be buried today at his parents home in Maragua.
