President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga have been urged to announce the election date.
The two were holding Kenyans to ransom by failing to state the date, Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) secretary general Francis Atwoli said.
“The two should meet as a matter of urgency and resolve this issue. It will spare Kenyans this uncertainty,” said the Cotu boss.
Mr Atwoli said leaders should stop concentrating on succession politics at the expense of the mandate that a High Court ruling bestowed on them.
The court ruled that elections can either be held in March 2013 or this year if the two principals decide to dissolve the government to pave the way for the polls. (READ: PM Odinga criticised over poll date)
He warned that the country risked plunging into chaos if the principals do not put Kenyans’ interests first and announce the date early.
Mr Atwoli was speaking at Kibagenge area in Trans Nzoia County during the burial of Mr Jonathan Baraza, a union official who was among 26 people who died when a lorry rammed a matatu at Mamboleo junction along the Kisumu-Kakamega road. (READ: Public accuse police over 26 deaths)

Mr Atwoli disclosed that some 300 workers’ representatives would meet at Tom Mboya Labour college in Kisumu in April to decide which presidential candidate to back.
The union boss criticised the current contenders for the presidency saying many did not have what it takes to run the country.
Forestry and Wildlife minister Noah Wekesa decried rising cases of road accidents and appealed to drivers to exercise caution.
