A Cabinet minister allied to the ODM has urged Mt Kenya residents to back Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta for the presidency to boost cohesion.
Cooperative Development minister Joseph Nyaga told Gichugu MP Martha Karua and his Gatanga counterpart Peter Kenneth to shelve their ambitions and rally behind Mr Kenyatta.
Addressing teachers during the Meru Mwalimu Sacco Annual General Meeting on Saturday, the minister said Mt Kenya region stood to suffer isolation from the rest of the country if the communities’ leaders were not united.
Mr Nyaga, who is an ODM nominated MP and an ally of Prime Minister Raila Odinga, suggested that Ms Karua and Mr Kenneth should seek other county seats or enter into partnership with politicians from other regions.
“I’m not discouraging my sister Martha Karua or my friend (Peter) Kenneth. I am seeking unity to enhance national cohesion. In Mt Kenya, we are speaking in 20 voices while other people are united.
“Mr Kenyatta can then sit and talk with leaders from other areas such as the Prime Minister (Mr Odinga), Mr Ruto and others. The senate and governor positions will require strong people,” he said.
He said disunity caused the post-election violence in 2008 and could be stopped through political unity with leaders from other communities. He cited Malaysia, which he said had a rotational presidency among its various communities.
At the same time, Ford Kenya has given strong indications that it might work with ODM ahead of the coming elections.

Party leader Moses Wetang’ula, secretary general Eseli Simiyu and Forestry Minister Noah Wekesa said they would work with ODM at a rally attended by two ODM legislators in Bungoma.
Dr Eseli said the party would ditch the PNU coalition because it had been given a raw deal. The meeting comes just days after Mr Odinga toured the county in search of support.
