The Democratic Party has welcomed presidential hopeful Mutava Musyimi to vie for nomination on its presidential ticket but said that the position was still open to other candidates.
Party secretary-general Chris Murungaru said the decision on who will be the party’s flag bearer will be reached at the National Delegates Conference.
“He has expressed interest, and we have told him that he can join the party and vie for the position of the flag bearer,” said Dr Murungaru.
“However it does not exclude others. That decision will be reached by the national delegates. The position is open to any member.”
The Rev Musyimi announced on Friday that he will seek the top office in this year’s elections through DP.
The Gachoka MP revealed this when he attended a DP meeting for civic, parliamentary, gubernatorial hopefuls at the African Brotherhood Church guest house in Machakos town.
“Marriage is for two people. I confirm that I have decided to join the DP. It is a focused party and prides itself of having presented a president whose track record will forever be remembered by generations to come. I believe this same party will produce another president,” he said.
President Kibaki alongside veteran politicians John Keen and Joseph Munyao are among the founders of the DP.
