  • Police say the vehicle’s brakes failed and the driver tried to warn bystanders to get out of the way
Ten people were killed and eight others seriously injured in an road accident on Sunday.
The vehicle was headed to Limuru town and on reaching the Gitaru junction, the brakes failed and it hit a pavement. The matatu rolled several times and hit a man who was standing near the road before hitting the wall at the T-junction.
The impact threw the vehicle up before it landed on its roof, killing nine passengers. Seven men and three women were injured.
According to witnesses, the vehicle, which plies the Limuru-Nairobi route, was approaching the junction at high speed and the driver was continuously hooting to warn those near the road to move away.
Brakes failed
Lari OCPD Joshua Opiyo said that the owner of the vehicle, Mr Gabriel Kiarie, who was driving, died in the accident.
Police suspect the vehicle’s brakes failed because the driver was seen trying to control the vehicle. The injured were rushed to the PCEA Kikuyu Mission Hospital and three of them are said to be in critical condition. The matatu driver said the owner wanted him to rest.
Seven people were killed and five others seriously injured along the same highway early last month in another accident involving a matatu, a lorry and a motorbike.
