Eldoret North MP William Ruto on Sunday launched United Republican Party (URP), which he will use to vie for the presidency.
The party, whose headquarters will be in Lavington, Nairobi, brings together rebel ODM MPs and other leaders including Trade Minister Chirau Mwakwere, Turkana Central MP Ekwee Ethuro, his Wajir South MP Mohammed Sirat and Mr Cyrus Jirongo of Lugari.
Mr Ruto and his allies ditched United Democratic Movement (UDM) last Monday after persistent wrangles in the party.
The URP, whose slogan is ‘Sema na Utende’ (Say and Do) was unveiled at Serena Hotel in Nairobi on Thursday.
At the party launch, the interim chairman Mr Francis Kaparo said two million cards will be distributed for a recruitment drive ahead of the general election.
Mr Kaparo who was unanimously endorsed as the party leader said the party election will be held from March 29 to 31.
Family values
Mr Ruto said the party will emphasise on family values to enhance a stable nation.
“We have several challenges in the country, and there are issues of drug abuse. Failing family values in the country concerns us as a party. We will ensure the family unit is strengthened,” said Mr Ruto.
He said majority of Kenyans fall into the poverty index on a daily basis because the country has failed to create wealth for its citizens.
Devolution
Mr Ruto said URP would ensure that the Bill on devolution is finalised to give 70 per cent of the young people in Kenya food security and job opportunities therefore promoting Vision 2030.
“We have the opportunity to challenge job insecurity. We are working on a Youth Plan that deals with youth vocational training and policies on offering affordable credit for investments,” he said.
“The youths are not a problem but a solution to this country,” he added.
Mr Ruto said URP will ensure there is a National Insurance Fund for all citizens and also promised to revamp the railway networks within 100 days at the helm of power.
