NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 15- Eldoret North MP William Ruto and his allies on Sunday officially launched the United Republican Party, (URP) which he would use to contend for the presidency in the forth coming General Elections.
Ruto who left the United Democratic Movement last week due to leadership wrangles said URP would be an issue based party focused on how to change the country for the better.
He said the party would be based on the doctrines of family values, economic growth, youth, security and infrastructure.
“As we sit here today in this hall, we know where we have come from, we know where we are, we know where we are going and we know how to get there. Let me welcome all Kenyans, the people who believe in the values we have espoused to join us,” he told delegates attending the launch at the Bomas of Kenya.
He added that the party had mechanisms to ensure elimination of hunger in the country through technology.
He also promised that within the first 100 days of a URP government, they would sign the necessary instruments to ensure there was a working railway system within the first two years.
“The cost of electricity has driven many factories out of our country to other destinations that have cheaper sources of power. It is possible for us to expand our energy sources to increase our production within the first five years of a URP government,” he said.
The Presidential hopeful also predicted that the coming elections would be about service delivery and performance which URP was ready to take up.
“And our issues are very clear, right from the onset we want to draw the line between this party and the others. This party is going to be about issues, we are going to talk about how to change this country for the better. I am sorry we don’t have time to talk about people or events,” he said.
At the same time, the party’s delegates endorsed former National Assembly Speaker Francis ole Kaparo as the party’s interim chairman.
“We want to create a selfless leadership. We want a leadership that focuses on issues or the problems of the people. Let’s return some dignity and decorum into politics,” Kaparo said.
He asked Kenyans to vote only for leaders that could help solve the problems the country faced.
“We have been fighting; we have been killing each other because we politicians have used that for our own benefit. I appeal to Kenyans, let us refuse this,” he said.
The United Republican Party which was unveiled Thursday last week has brought together rebel Orange Democratic Movement MPs.
