Minister for Cooperative Development Joseph Nyaga has urged his Transport counterpart Amos Kimunya to retain 14- seater matatus. Nyaga who was speaking in Kitale said 14-seater matatus were appropriate for shorter distances and them will be a major setback to the transport industry.
“According to views and complaints I have received from matatu stakeholders, the matatus should continue to serve short distances to enhance faster service delivery,'' he said. He said buses were only appropriate for longer distances. He also said the industry has employed millions of Kenyans and the decision by the Transport ministry to elliminate 14-seater matatus will increase unemployment.
