VICE President Kalonzo Musyoka yesterday said the coalition cabinet recently resolved that the country will hold the general election in December. Kalonzo said neither the President nor Prime Minister, Raila Odinga have a "secret weapon" in regard to elections. "Me as a presidential candidate and others in the race are privy to this fact," the VP said.
He was speaking in Kajiado town during the ordination of Reverend Gaddiel Lenini as Bishop of Emmanuel Cathedral Church by The Rt Rev Archbishop Eliud Webukala of ACK. The Vice President was accompanied by ministers, George Saitoti and William Ntimama. Others were assistant minister Joseph Nkaisery and Mutava Musyimi.
High Court judges recently ruled that elections should be held in March 2013 unless the two principals agree to dissolve the coalition government this year. If that were to happen, elections would have to be held within 60 days of the coalition being dissolved. Kalonzo said elections will be held on December 17 as the term of the president elapses at the end of this year. "Under the new constitution there is no secret about when the elections will be held," Kalonzo said.
He agreed with the ruling of the judges saying what was left now was a matter of interpretation and convenience in arriving at the actual date of the elections. Kalonzo, however, observed that having presidential and other elective positions provided for by the new constitution may present a logistical nightmare for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
Rev. Lenini, 42, takes over from Jeremiah Taama who has retired. A special sermon was delivered by Right Rev. Jackson ole Sapit who beseeched Christians to rededicate themselves to the service of God. Prof Saitoti asked all faithful in Kenya to pray for a peace and harmony to prevail as the country gears for general elections. He said Kenyans and the world had great hopes in the success of the exercise, particularly after they promulgated a new constitution. Rev Musyimi urged religious leaders to play an impartial role in guiding all political aspirants spiritually.
