Mumias Sugar chief executive officer Evans Kidero’s quest for the Nairobi county governorship was endorsed by a group of Luhya leaders yesterday. Nairobi mayor George Aladwa led over 100 leaders to support Kidero's bid for the governorship. “Let us not use the trial and error method. We need to support someone who has shown leadership qualities. Kidero came out in the open and has proved that he needs our support and we shall support him,” said Aladwa during the meeting held in Nairobi.
The meeting, held at Teazers Restaurant along Mucai Road, was attended mainly by ODM leaders. Aladwa challenged leaders to declare their interest in elective posts early enough in order to get support. Cecafa secretary Ggeneral Nicholas Musonye, who is also aspiring for the Kawangware parliamentary seat, said Kidero’s impeccable record at the sugar milling company had placed him ahead of his political rivals. The leaders pledged their support for Kidero for the seat on an ODM ticket.
However, the mayor, who is also an ODM bigwig, urged Kidero to keep his options open incase his interests were to be curtailed within the party. The race for city governorship has attracted several key personalities and is expected to get even tighter with elections a few months away. Among those who have declared interest for the seat include Nairobi town clerk Phillip Kisia, stockbroker Jimna Mbaru, Nairobi CBD chairman Timothy Muriuki and city politician Kevin Malinga.
