Some leaders in Meru have endorsed Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta to inherit President Kibaki’s votes in the region.
The Meru County Forum, comprising teachers, civic leaders and other professionals, said the Kanu chairman had a better chance to win than other G7 Alliance members.
The forum’s chairman, Mr Mutuma Nkanata, urged the community to vote for someone who would maintain President Kibaki’s legacy. (READ: Kibaki tells Meru not to worry about future without him)
“Meru has about one million voters. We should make an informed decision after analysing the candidates. According to reliable and credible research, only Uhuru can deliver the presidency.
“We should fully support him and avoid shifting from one party or candidate to another,” said Mr Nkanata.
He criticised some presidential candidates whom he accused of giving handouts to local opinion leaders to divide the Meru vote.
East African Community assistant minister Peter Munya (Tigania East) and his Imenti North counterpart Silas Muriuki did not endorse a particular candidate, saying they supported the PNU Alliance.

They said PNU Alliance candidates including Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Mr Kenyatta and Internal Security Minister George Saitoti will have to undergo a party nomination exercise where the winner will get the backing of others.
