Former ruling party Kanu on Sunday had its constitution revised to conform with electoral and political laws in the Constitution.
The revised document locks out MPs and political aspirants from holding party positions, setting the stage for Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and other public officers to leave their party positions.
Other changes made are reducing the number of national officials from 16 to eight. (READ: Kanu set for summit amidst brewing issues)
There will also be a congress of governors to advice on devolution and a policy advisory council.
The party will propose to the National Delegates Council that the name Kenya African National Union be changed to Kenya Alliance of National Unity to guard against race-related legal challenges.
Mr Kenyatta, the party chairman, said that Kanu “being the only national party” would embark on a nationwide recruitment of members in January.
Speaking at the end of the two-day retreat in Naivasha, party vice-chairman Gideon Moi said the new laws would allow Kanu to prepare for next year’s election.
The national executive council agreed to hold a NDC to adopt the changes.
