Raila says he will respect public’s choice of leaders

By Anderson Ojwang’
Prime Minister Raila Odinga has declared that he will not anoint or support any candidates for elective posts in the next General Election.
Speaking in Mbita, Raila said people should decide whom they wanted to be their next members of Parliament, senators and governors.
"I will be ready to work with the people you elect for me. I hope you will give me a strong team. I want the people to have power to choose their leaders," he said.
The PM was attending the burial of Ambassador Michael Okeyo in Rusinga Island in Mbita. His sentiments have been viewed as a blunt message to politicians who hang on his coattail to winelections but are unpopular with the public.
Democracy
A close ally of Raila, Mzee Odungi Randa, said this would allow democracy to grow and mature in the region and across the country.
"Let the people decide and be counted by their works. They should not hang onto Raila’s coat to win elections. Raila’s name should not be used by aspirants because all those contesting are his people," he said.
Raila also urged MPs to go out and campaign for him in various parts of the country and avoid retreating to the constituencies in fear of their opponents.
