- Traffic bosses accused of intervening to stop the recent transfer of their relatives and children
Discontent is brewing in the traffic police department following alleged cancellation of recent transfers to favour relatives of senior officers.
Sources said senior officers intervened to cushion their children and relatives affected by the mass transfers.
Those affected by the transfers affecting close to 600 traffic police officers were directed to report to their new stations by August 25.
Our sources said that following spirited lobbying by senior officers whose relatives were moved, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Mathew Iteere, was on Tuesday night expecting a new list of names to be posted.
Dismissed allegation
When contacted for comment Internal Security assistant minister Orwa Ojodeh dismissed the allegation as hearsay, adding that those who have stayed long in various stations have to be transferred.
“Transfer is normal and applicable to all especially those who have over-stayed at stations. If an officer has been in a station for just six months, there is no need to transfer him or her,” Mr Ojodeh said.
Numbers of road blocks which, as usual, have been converted into road tolls were also reduced in an effort to curb corruption that has dogged the sector over the years.
At the same time, a traffic police officer was yesterday charged with sending a threatening text message to a senior officer. Mrs Joyce Mugure Wanjohi, who is based in Luanda, appeared before a Vihiga court.
Mrs Wanjohi was charged with sending the offensive message to Mr Charlton Murithi telling him ‘‘if you want to be a traffic officer you can wear a traffic uniform and go on the road, you start stopping vehicles and do not bother me any more”.
The offence was said to have been committed on July 21. She was freed on a Sh20,000 bond.
