An ODM contender for the City mayoral primaries elections has stepped down. Instead, William Kinyany (Kariobangi South Ward) has said he will vie for deputy mayor's position. The arrangement appears to have been crafted by the ODM to lock out its coalition partner PNU. He stepped down after a day-long meeting of a section of ODM councillors chaired by the influential Kileleshwa Councillor Elias Otieno yesterday. The move is a further setback to another faction that has been fronting a candidate to challenge the incumbent George Aladwa.
Aladwa will now face greenhorn Paul Simba Arati (nominated) at the nominations slotted for this weekend at a Naivasha hotel. Arati upped the stakes in the campaigns with promises that he will be sponsoring six ODM councillors for a fully-paid trip to China if elected party flag bearer. His campaigns were temporarily jolted by allegations that he was being funded by the ODM rebel wing led by suspended minister William Ruto. To the claims, he retorted, “When you through yourself in the political arena, one should expect to be stripped naked through all manner of rumours.”
