Fisheries minister Amason Kingi has predicted mass division among political leaders in Coast province ahead of 2012. Kingi said he attempted four times to unite cabinet ministers Chirau Ali Mwakwere with other Coast political leaders but failed. Speaking in Garashi during the burial of a former Kilifi county council chairman Gilbert Mijidu Menza, Kingi said Mwakwere was the only potential presidential candidate for the Coast next year. Mwakwere has since shown his support for UDM leader William Ruto.Kingi said the region had lost hope for not staying united.
‘‘The Coast had high hopes for Mwakwere to be the presidential flag bearer in 2012 but his stand to support Ruto really shocked us,’’ said Kingi.
The Magarini MP said there would be mass divisions in the region as leaders will be grouped in different political parties. Kingi also accused the Shirikisho party of Kenya of undermining the Coast people by supporting PNU led President Kibaki while a majority were supporting Prime Minister Raila Odinga's ODM. ‘‘During the 2007 general elections the Shirikisho Party of Kenya betrayed the Coast people for supporting PNU instead of ODM which had a vision for devolved system of government (majimbo),’’ he said. Ruto toured the region early last month to garner support for his presidential ambitions.
