Mr Musyoka regretted that in the past, incidences of food poisoning occasioned by consumption of contaminated relief food have been reported with sometimes cases of fatalities witnessed.
“I am asking the provincial administration and those entrusted in handling relief food to ensure that the food are fit for human consumption and free from aflatoxin that will endanger people’s lives,” he said.
The Vice President was speaking at Karunga Secondary School in his Mwingi North Constituency during a funds drive in aid of the school.
Mr Musyoka assured that the government will continue to distribute famine relief food to drought stricken areas of the country to cushion people against the devastating situation.
He, however, said soon the persistent total crop failures will be history, noting that the government has set aside billions of shillings towards water harvesting and storage that will transform rain-fed farming into irrigated agriculture to guarantee food security at all seasons.
Mr Musyoka particularly announced that Sh1 billion has been set aside for the development of water supply by the Tana and Athi River Development Authority (TARDA) in Kitui county and other areas of lower Eastern.
He said despite the harsh climatic condition of the region, the area is rich in mineral deposits including coal which when exploited will change the economy of the region for the better.
On education, The Vice President urged parents and teachers to help student realize their aspirations through education.
Mr Musyoka, particularly stressed the importance of girl child education, warning against early marriages and unwanted pregnancies that have continued to impede on girls academic pursuit.
Earlier, the Vice President joined other mourners for a funeral ceremony of the late Mzee Musyoka Ndeere (Kanathi) at Ikuuni village in Mwingi.
The late Mzee Ndeere past away on May 30, 2011 following a short illness.
Mr Musyoka described the deceased as a very resourceful person who actively participated on matters of development in not only the larger Mwingi but also in Kitui County.
He encouraged the family to depend upon God for strength and courage during this difficult moment of great lose.
The late Mzee Ndeere who died aged 82, leaves behind 12 children, 28 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
