Jakoyo Midiwo wants clergy to pay tax

By George Olwenya

Joint parliamentary chief whip Jakoyo Midiwo now wants the clergy to also pay taxes like the rest of Kenyans, as contained in the new constitution.
Midiwo said pressure should not only be directed to members of parliament to pay taxes on their salaries and allowances but the church must also do the same.
"Just like other Kenyans the clergy must also pay taxes to KRA because they earn salaries and ownproperties in the country," said Midiwo.
The legislator was addressing mourners during the burial of Mama Wifrida Awino Nyayieka, mother in-law to former Marie Stops Country Director Cyprian Awiti at Jina in Gem constituency.
Midiwo who is also the MP for Gem said that the church was rich and had invested in real estateacross the country and should be compelled to pay taxes like other Kenyans.
"The new constitution is not for politicians alone but for everybody including the church and we must accept that things must change as the new laws come into force," he added.
Midiwo said the country would soon come up with a comprehensive income tax policy that will see each Kenyan pay tax according to the new constitution.
