Immigration minister Otieno Kajwang’ said on Sunday that arrangements had been finalised to ensure that the youth and other applicants start getting ID cards from August 15.
“My ministry has already made all the necessary arrangements that would ensure all eligible Kenyans get ID cards to enable them participate effectively in next year’s electoral processes,” said Mr Kajwang’.
Speaking during a funds drive at Ngodhe Secondary School in his Mbita constituency, the minister said all officers from the National Registration Bureau would be expected at the sub locations and schools to hasten the process.
“Circulars have already been issued to all relevant officers to make sure that nothing frustrates the process when it kicks off on 15th of this month,” he said.
Mr Kajwang’ reiterated that newly married women would not be sent back to their parents to seek authentication.
Rule abolished
“Only the local chiefs and husbands to the newly married women will be required to sign to avoid the previous cumbersome method of sending women back to their parents to get signatures,” he added.
At the same time, the minister scoffed at attempts by central Kenya MPs to endorse Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta to run for the presidency in next year’s general election.
“We do not need tribal groupings while in search of the country’s leadership,” he said.
