The wrangling at the Interim Independent Electoral Commission did not come as a surprise, Gichugu MP Martha Karua said on Sunday.

“It is body that started from scratch and amidst the background of a lot of rot of the previous commission, it too has its own challenges. Word has always been out, it’s only that it was never published.”
She spoke at the Calvary Temple Church in Buru Buru, Nairobi, where she attended the Sunday service and drummed up support for Narc-Kenya’s contender in the Kamukunji by-election Brian Weke.
Ms Karua, who is in the presidential race, challenged the commission to give Kenyans a credible system.
“Yes you have done relatively well but do not brush aside crucial issues that can throw us into problems in the forth coming elections. Let the commissioners led by chairman Issack Hassan not sweep the issues raised under the carpet. Let them face them head on.”
The MP also accused the commission of not taking action on complaints raised by political parties.
“They also have a habit of not even answering letters. I wrote to them on behalf of Narc-Kenya about several issues we observed in the Kirinyaga by-election, which we do not think was fair, but they did not respond,” she said.
Ms Karua dismissed calls by Central Kenya MPs to support Finance minister Uhuru Kenyatta for the presidency.
“That’s okay, it is within their right. If there is a presidency that is purely given by a group of 26 MPs, that is quite okay to me, but I am vying for presidency of the whole of Kenya, not Central Province,” she said.
The former Justice minister said Parliament has its work cut out on the pending Bills.
“These Bills are not being developed from scratch, some of them we have been working on them for long. I think it will be possible and we are working towards that.”
MPs have up to August 27 to pass the Bills.
