Adult and mature African entertainment is dying in Nairobi. Apart from the shrinking “local” pubs, there is hardly a venue where connoisseurs of authentic African music can relax and enjoy their favourite art in a decent environment. Most clubs are run by youthful deejays, playing fast tempo computer-generated “tracks” that are in vogue. All is not lost though, there’s a new way to spend your weekend - Rhumba in the Park. Presented by Soundafrica and Club Volar, ‘Rhumba in the Park’ will be a monthly entertainment feast for a clientele defined by its love for live music, especially African.
It will be held every first Saturday of the month in the serene and beautiful lawns of the Ngong Racecourse. The event premiers tonight, with two of Nairobi’s finest bands: Soundafrique Band, the leading afro music live band in Nairobi led by Chumba, the fast-rising star and EMAS nominee for best afro fusion artiste, and former Fally Ipupa bandmate, Evalah Mbuta (pictured below), and his Station Japan Fiesta. Rhumba in the Park promises lots of fun, drink and food for revellers. They will have the pleasure of requesting any classic and contemporary rhumba/African songs to be played live and join in singing it. The live performances will alternate with nostalgic DJ mixes.
Gate charges are Sh500 and Sh1,000 for VIP tickets.
