Hundreds of people were last Sunday disappointed when visiting German evangelist Reinhard Bonnke did not give them a ‘healing touch’ at an event held at Nairobi Primary School. The meeting that begun at 8am attracted a large crowd. The preacher was in the country to open a weeklong conference hosted by Faith Evangelistic Ministries.
Among those in attendance were Lady Justice Martha Koome, former PCEA Moderator David Githii as well as Rev Allan Kiuna and his wife Cathy. There was heavy security at the conference with armed APs and plain clothes police officers deployed. The preacher's motorcade included top-of-the-range vehicles including a police chase car.
After Kenya, the preacher will head to Ethiopia in July next year. He visited Nigeria several times in recent years. "My full attention is on Africa," Bonnke said. He explained that his outreach in Africa is expanding day by day "because I have no message of hate. I do not attack any religion. I just preach Jesus," he said.
Sources say that despite visiting Nigeria several times, Bonnke’s attempt to hold a crusade in the northern Nigerian city of Kano in October 1991 was opposed by a group of Muslim leaders known as the Council of Ulama. His visits there have seen Muslim extremists kill Christians and burn several churches. Bonnke said he had no plans at this time to visit northern Nigeria. Bonnke was last in the country 10 years ago. In 1988, former President Moi led senior cabinet members to the Uhuru Park crusade.
